What is the difference between rock art and graffiti?

Distinguishing between graffiti and rock art can be a matter of perspective. The term graffiti is used here to mean initials, phrases, or designs that have been carved or drawn on rock surfaces in modern or relatively recent times. Graffiti from previous centuries can be of historical interest.

Modern graffiti produced by people using knives, spray paint, marking pens, or other implements may seem innocuous, but in fact it is a form of vandalism that often defaces or destroys older rock art. The process of removing it can be very costly, if at all possible, and such repairs can cause further damage to older rock art. For this reason, it is illegal to leave graffiti in many public areas, including Arkansas's state parks.
