Deep in the lower Mississippi Valley lies one of the largest and most impressive archeological sites in Arkansas. These ancient mounds rise from the valley, shrouded in mystery. This book explores the history, science, and folklore behind Plum Bayou Mounds, from its ancient origins to the present day, in which archeologists discover the secrets of these earthen monuments and the Native Plum Bayou communities who built them.
Dr. Paige Ford, station archeologist at the Arkansas Archeological Survey’s Plum Bayou Research Station, and artist Sean Fitzgibbon are collaborating on the book alongside an advisory committee made up of educators, archeologists, and Tribal Nations with ancestral homelands in Arkansas. This co-created project will create a nonfiction graphic novel that illuminates the field of archeology and the history behind these fascinating mounds, emphasizing the connections to modern communities of all sorts!
This blog will post updates about the project, its progress and process, and any other fun related news!
