Summary Of Job Duties
The Society/Survey Liaison is responsible for coordination of public archeology activities between the Arkansas Archeological Survey and the avocational Arkansas Archeological Society. These responsibilities include communications, liaison with Survey research stations and local avocational archeologists, engagement with and outreach to the statewide Society Executive Board, local Society chapters around the state, and the Society-based Board of Advisors. Additionally, the Liaison leads coordination of the annual events jointly organized between the Survey, the Society, and external organizations, and co-administers the Arkansas Site Stewardship Program with the State Archeologist and Site Stewardship Committee Chair. The Society/Survey Liaison also maintains Society mailings, records, and archival materials at the Survey Coordinating Office in Fayetteville.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.A./B.S. degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Experience with avocational archeological, citizen science, and/or volunteer organizations
  • Experience planning events
  • Experience managing social media and creating digital newsletters
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel, including several weeks during the Annual Training Program

 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience maintaining databases and WordPress editing
  • Experience working with Arkansas Archeological Society or similar programs
  • Planning events for over 50 people
  • Familiarity with negotiating and executing contracts for organizations
  • Experience creating schedules and timelines for events
  • Nonprofit management experience
  • Archeological field and/or laboratory experience

 

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
  • General knowledge of archeological methods, practices, and stewardship or an interest in learning
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Skill in using social media platforms, digital editing, layout, publication software and/or digital newsletter platforms
  • Ability to work in a collaborative framework with professional staff and external (avocational and general public) stakeholders

 

Responsibilities with examples of specific activities:
Coordinating Annual Society Training Program 30%
    • Advertise the program through social media
    • Consult with training program director for all activity plans
    • Manage registrations (both online and via post) for 45-100 volunteers
    • Assist volunteers and staff with directions, equipment needs, purchases, and scheduling conflicts before and during training program
Planning and managing Society Annual Meeting 25%
    • Plan for and oversee all activities that will occur during the meeting including registration, meals and receptions, auction, keynote address, field trips, and awards
    • Seek out sponsors for monetary support and donations for goodie bags and auction
    • Identify vendors
Facilitating Society Board meetings and Society mailings 25%
    • Hold quarterly meetings on zoom (generally in the evening)
    • Coordinate physical and digital distribution of bi-monthly Field Notes (the Society’s periodical)
    • Keep membership updated with monthly digital newsletters
Supporting Archeology Month Activities through Society 10%
    • Plan events locally and statewide to promote archeology during March
    • Manage social media throughout the month to highlight activities
Coordination of Society chapters and Survey Research Stations, Maintaining Society records 10%
    • Visit with local chapters regularly (in person or virtually)
    • Help schedule outreach events in different parts of the state with Survey stations and Society chapters

 

Salary:  $41,000
