Manuscripts submitted for publication should be complete and conform to the SAA style guide (American Antiquity style) and Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. "Complete" means that the manuscript includes: (1) the complete, spell-checked text; (2) final (or at least near-final) versions of all graphics and all photographs; (3) final versions of all tables; (4) a complete bibliography of References Cited. Text files must be in Word or Word-compatible format.
Authors also may submit comments and /or reviews received from professional archaeologists regarding earlier versions of the manuscript.
Manuscripts should include front matter, i.e., title/cover page, abstract, table of contents, list of figures, and list of tables. Submit all front matter items in one file.
Formatting should be kept to an absolute minimum. Do not use custom tab settings.
Authors should thoroughly check concordance between in-text citations and References Cited.
Abstracts and keywords
Abstracts should be concise, under 200 words in length, and should provide a summary of the main arguments and conclusions of your article or book.
Please provide 5 keywords or search terms that describe the content, themes, or other relevant aspects of your article or book. Keywords will be used for Library of Congress headings and for search engine optimization to help readers find your book. Keywords should not exceed 600 characters in total. List the most relevant keywords first, separate keywords with semicolons, and each keyword should be a single word or a 2–3-word phrase.
Headings
Use consistent formatting to make heading levels clear, e.g., main headings centered and bold, second-level headings flush left and bold, and tertiary-level headings flush left and bold italic.
Figures
Figures (defined as all illustrations) should not be embedded in the text. Include callouts for figures (within brackets, all caps, bold) at appropriate places within the manuscript. Figures should be placed sequentially at the end of each respective chapter. Prepare a blank page with a figure number and caption for each figure.
  • Figures should be submitted separately as individual files; keep file names short and include figure number (as presented in callouts, e.g., reflecting chapter number and order in that chapter)
  • Figures should be submitted as minimum 300 dpi (up to 600 dpi) TIFF files. Images copied and pasted into Word files and images copied directly from websites are unusable for print.
  • Artifact photographs should include a professional (not hand-drawn) photographic scale.
  • Maps should include a north arrow and a scale. All symbolic keys to maps should appear on the figure itself, not separately in the caption.
  • For Popular Series book submissions, keep in mind that figures will be reduced to fit the dimensions of the book (6”x9”). Maximum dimensions for a figure in a popular series book are 4.25 inches by 4.25 inches. Complex illustrations and maps with small lettering originally designed for 8.5”x11” layout will not reduce well.
Figure count limits
Print publications have a limit of 10 figures per 10,000 words; popular series books are limited to 25 color figures; research series books are limited to 10 color figures. We encourage authors to reconfigure charts and other graphics, using differences in shading and patterns, so that they can be printed in black and white.
Permissions
It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission to publish images not belonging to the author(s) or to reuse and reprint any previously published material (for which you do not hold the copyright, and which are not available through a Creative Commons license).
Additional Information
Please suggest names of subject area specialists whose comments would assist us in reviewing your manuscript.  Do not include names of dissertation advisors, committee members, or close colleagues who are associated with you or your manuscript.
For book manuscripts, please provide a brief summary that describes who your intended audience is for the book and what your book contributes to the current body of literature in the field/discipline.
